DING DONG EARRINGS ARE STAYING LONG…

Its official. In this month’s September issue of Vogue really long earrings, the proper chandelier variant, almost touching your shoulders kind are here to stay and are THE accessory for Winter. Some of us were brave enough to embrace this trend this summer with tassel pom pom's being the favourite with fashion folk shown on Instagram next to tanned swan like necks worn with one shoulder dresses.

I have always been slightly hesitant of this trend and only on my recent July trip to The Hamptons did I have the courage to really go for it and brave the bold…. You see I was worried: A. Because I didn’t want to look like Pat Butcher, ex pub loving landlady in Eastenders who had a penchant for leopard print and a bauble or two hanging from her earlobes back in the day and B. Because I was always told you had to have a neck like a giraffe to carry them off! My neck is more reminiscent of a Bull Frog. I am not putting myself down – my neck isn’t one of my best assets let it be said, I have many but it definitely isn’t one of them, it could do with a good few more inches on it.

It was only once I had entered the wonderful world of Aerin ( Aerin Lauder’s new shop in Southhampton - on Long Island, if you didn’t know) that my worries subsided and I knew no matter what that I had to try the most beautiful sweet like ( nicknamed Les Bon Bons as they are good enough to eat) earrings by Rebecca de Ravenel. One look in the mirror and I was hooked, literally. I absolutely loved them and I had a complete revelation…. long earrings DO suit everyone not just those with necks resembling Gisele's.

It's because long earrings are flattering. They immediately draw the onlookers eye towards them which means they detract from what is going on elsewhere. They revamp any outfit and bring new life with them, they are fun, full of personality and can be worn with long or short hair, day or evening and can be changed as often as you want.

Definitely this Winter stylistically there is will be a nod to the 1980’s with them, power dressing at its best with lots of black beading, optical shapes and really structural designs being favoured. Oscar De la Renta, Lanvin and Mui Mui have gone for it but there are lots about on the High Street that look just as good if not better. My top tip would be to experiment, try as many different shapes and lengths as you feel comfortable with. I wore my first long pair out with a black silk shirt and some jeans for dinner the other night. I kept it simple and made sure all the attention was about my ears. I didn’t go bold and clashing wearing my dangliest darlings with my prints or stripes but whose to say next time I won’t….
